Thousands of Kadamay members occupy Quezon City road

Thousands of members of urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) occupied Agham Road in Quezon City as they prepare to join protest actions on Labor Day.

Carlito Badion, secretary general of Kadamay, said at least 5,000 members gathered on the northbound lane of Agram Road.

A radio dzBB report by Luisito Santos said the Kadamay members started occupying the road on Saturday night.

The group's members put up tents and spent the night on the road.

Badion said they will again stay overnight in the area and leave on Monday to join protest actions on Monday, May 1.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has advised motorists to avoid Agham Road, which has been closed due to Kadamay's occupation.

There are no police efforts to push the Kadamay members away from Agham Road as of this posting.

March to Mendiola

From Agham Road, the group will march to Liwasang Bonifacio in Lawton, Manila and proceed to Don Chino Roces Street (formerly Mendiola), near Malacañang, to converge with other protesting groups, including the Kilusang Mayo Uno.

Badion said they will express their dismay over President Rodrigo Duterte's failure to fulfill his campaign promises, including higher pay for workers.

Thousands of Kadamay members are occupying housing units for informal settlers and police and military personnel in Pandi, Bulacan.

Duterte had said that he will not allow Kadamay members to occupy other housing units outside of Bulacan.

The President is expected to lead the Labor Day celebrations at the People's Park in Davao City, which labor group Lakas Manggagawa Labor Center (LMLC) said was "breaking tradition."

LMLC said 50 labor group leaders were invited to join Duterte in Davao City, but majority of them have declined the invitation due to plans of protest actions in Metro Manila.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III had said Duterte will announce a surprise package for workers in Davao City. —ALG, GMA News
