Pasig River ferry services remain closed as authorities remove water hyacinths

The Pasig River Ferry services, which usually offer a much quicker alternative to commuters trying to avoid heavily congested EDSA, remained suspended on Tuesday, as authorities continue to weed out water hyacinths clogging the waterway.

In a report on Unang Balita, GMA News' Marisol Abdurahman said the amount of water hyacinths in the river have gone down particularly in the Guadalupe area, after a clean up drive by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission that started last week.

Despite the clean-up, however, the river has yet to be totally rid of water hyacinths. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) suspended ferry services last June 26, and would try to cruise upstream through the river later in the day to check if the services can be resumed.

Popular among commuters trying to evade traffic-riddled Metro Manila roads like EDSA, the Pasig River Ferry can take a passenger from Guadalupe in Mandaluyong to Intramuros in Manila. — Rafeea Custodio/MDM, GMA News
