PNP-HPG: New witness in car rental scam was mastermind's trusted employee
The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) announced that it has a new witness against alleged car rental scam mastermind Rafaela Anunciacion.
"He or she is a trusted personnel/employee ni Rafaela [Anunciacion]," PNP-HPG spokesperson Senior Inspector Jem Delantes said.
"Na-share niya sa amin 'yung how th group operates, kung gaano karaming sasakyan ang na-involve doon, tapos ibinigay din niya sa amin 'yung ibang documents to prove na ganoon karami yung mga sasakyan," Delantes noted.
Anuncion, the alleged mastermind of the so-called car rental or "rent-tangay" scam, was arrested in Sta. Rosa, Laguna early in March.
Of the 600 cars recovered by the PNP-HPG from the alleged car rental scam syndicate, 100 units were not returned yet to the banks and owners of the vehicles.
The remaining vehicles will be released once the investigations are finished by authorities.
The syndicate, which victimized over 500 persons, allegedly carried out the scheme by giving "fraudulent promises" of rental income.
The police on Friday said that several people involved in the scam have yet to be arrested pending the issuance of the warrants for their arrest. —report from Jun Veneracion/Ted Cordero/ALG, GMA News
