Suspect in 8-yr-old girl's rape-slay shoots self in Camp Crame —police

A suspect in an eight-year-old girl's rape-slay allegedly grabbed his police escort's gun and shot himself inside the Philippine National Police's (PNP) national headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Tuesday night.

PNP-Anti-Kidnapping Group chief Senior Superintendent Glenn Dumlao said rape-slay suspect Hilario "Larry" Herrera was being escorted by Senior Police Officer 1 Chaluyen and Police Officer 3 Parafina to their office when he grabbed the gun of one of the policemen and shot himself.

Herrera had just attended inquest proceedings at the Department of Justice in Manila and was being escorted back to the AKG office at around 8:55 p.m. when the incident happened.

Dumlao said Herrera grabbed one of the policeman's gun while they were on their way to his detention cell on the AKG office's second floor.

He said Herrera shot himself in the head.

The suspect was rushed by policemen to the PNP General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Herrera was arrested for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jaen, Nueva Ecija last July 19.

The suspect kidnapped the child and raped her. The girl's lifeless body was found in a cemetery. —with Amita Legaspi/BAP/ALG, GMA News
