How QC residents dealt with floods after habagat rains
Monsoon rains enhanced by Tropical Storm Gorio caused high-reaching floods in different parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday.
Residents of Gumamela Street in the Roxas district in Quezon City swam through the overhead-level of water until it subsided around noontime.
As Quezon City did not announce the suspension of their children's classes despite the flooding, parents expressed their anger on Oscar Oida's report for "24 Oras."
Some of the children, who were advised not to attend class and instead stay indoors, were seen playing in the water.
Residents either braved the floods or paid P20 pesos for a boat ride.
Two men wading the cold water even warmed themselves with a drinking session.
"Pampainit, dahil malamig 'yung baha, nagpainit nalang," they said.
According to a resident, the dredging done in the river beside Gumamela Street did not do much help in aiding the flood problem.
"Nung hinukay nila 'yan, nag-ano nga sila dun sa ilalim ng mga buha-buhangin, pero yung lupa, tinumpak nila diyan, tinabak lang nila diyan, lumubog uli 'yung lupa 'dun sa ilog," he told Oida.
Meanwhile, Calamba Street in Barangay Salvacion also had to wait until noon for the gutter-deep water to subside.
Only trucks were able to pass Araneta Avenue due to the water that rose thigh-high.
Heavy rains also tipped a tree along Scout Gandia and crushed a vehicle's hood. Rescuers immediately arrived and the driver was unharmed.
CDRRMO action officer Alex Nadurata said their cameras remain on the look-out and rescue boats on stand-by.
He added that bodies of flashflood victims often take a day to recover. —Margaret Claire Layug/JST, GMA News
