Fire razes 12 homes, stores in Malate, Manila

Fire broke out and razed at least 12 houses and stores before dawn Friday along Singalong Street in Malate, Manila.

A report by Mav Gonzales on GMA News' Unang Balita said the fire started in a residential compound around 3 a.m.

Since most of the houses were made of wood, the fire spread rapidly in the area.

Residents were able to immediately evacuate the compound but failed to save most of their belongings.

There were no reported injuries, but a female resident fainted in the middle of the incident.

Responding firefighters doubled their efforts to put out the fire as it occured near a gasoline station.

The fire reached the fifth alarm and was put under control at around 4 a.m.

It took firemen nearly two hours or at 5:50 a.m. to douse the last of the flames.

"Kung makikita niyo meron siyang junkshop diyan...Puro combustible ang nandiyan pero may firewall," Fire Senior Inspector Reden Alumno, Bureau of Fire Protection Manila Investigation Chief, said.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and determine the cost of damage. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/KG/KVD, GMA News
