Las Piñas, Marikina fires leave 100 families homeless


Barely two weeks before Christmas, more than 100 families lost their homes to fire in Barangay Manuyo Dos, Las Piñas City Monday night.

City Fire Chief Inspector Jessie Calumpiano said the fire started at around 7:45 p.m. and was put out at 10:29 p.m., damaging around 50 homes/
A report on Unang Balita the fire started at the residence of a certain Georgia Cubiyo.

Authorities said the fire damaged P100,000 worth of private properties and left at least 100 families homeless.

Another fire broke out at H. Bautista Street in Barangay Concepcion Uno, Marikina City shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, damaging at least six houses and properties worth up to P300,000.

The fire broke out at 12:51 a.m. and reached the second alarm before firefighters extinguished it at 1:28 a.m..

Netizen John Paul Repomanta of Marikina City shared to GMA News' YouScoop a video of the incident.

The damaged houses were made of light materials, according to firefighters, who still had to conduct mopping up operations after declaring fire out as there were apparently still flames that had to be put out around 6 a.m.

Residents including Ofelia Aledia and Angelina Lopez—who had rush out of their homes carrying only important documents—stayed the night out in the street. No casualty was reported in relation to the fire.

Investigators are still studying what may have caused both fire incidents.

Firefighters reminded the public to be more careful with electrical appliances, especially during the holiday season.

“Hinihiling namin ang tulong niyo lalo ngayong parating ang Pasko, darating ang Bagong Taon, sana po ay magtulung-tulong tayo na maiwasan natin ang sakuna kasi po ay lahat tayo ay apektado dito,” Calumpiano said. —Nicole-Anne C. Lagrimas/ALG, GMA News
