QC rescuers undergo advanced cardiac life support training

Seventeen rescuers from the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO) had attended a two-day training on advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), ahead of the expected onslaught of strong Typhoon Ompong.

In the ACLS, doctors from the East Avenue Medical Center gave tips to QC rescuers on different approaches and interventions for the treatment of medical emergencies.

“Sa basic life support (BLS) kasi, ang itinuturo lang ‘yung pagpe-perform ng CPR sa pasyente. Sa ACLS, nagre-rely tayo sa gamot na pangpuso at defibrillation. Hindi lang basic. Dapat more advanced approach sa puso para masuportahan ‘yung pasyente,” EAMC- Emergency Medicine Dr. Karlo V. Hermo said.

According to QCDRRM responder Angelo Prado, aside from the new medical techniques in saving lives, the seminar will greatly help them strengthen their teamwork in responding to medical emergencies.

“Mas makakapag-respond po tayo appropriately at mas mabilis po at mas efficient nating mare-respondehan ang mga emergencies dahil sa teamwork,” Prado said.

Before undergoing ACLS, the responders have already undergone BLS. The said training is part of the city’s measures to strengthen the capability of the QCDRRMO to be able to respond to life-threatening emergencies.

Earlier on Thursday, the city government announced that it has ordered the advance deployment of boats and rescue teams to the city's  flood-prone areas to prepare for the onset of Typhoon Ompong.

Quezon City's Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams were to be deployed beginning Thursday in critical areas, including Barangay Apolonio Samson, the barangays along G. Araneta Avenue, abd flood-prone areas, specifically Barangay Roxas and Barangay Silangan. —LBG, GMA News
