Quezon City approves P1 fare hike for tricycles

The Quezon City government has passed an ordinance giving the go-signal for a P1 increase in tricycle fare in the city.

The increase was in response to fluctuations in fuel prices, according to the media release from the city government.

The newly approved City Ordinance 2575-2018 also cited the excise tax imposed on gasoline under Republic Act No. 10963 or Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law.

With the approval of the ordinance, the  minimum fare for public tricycles will increase from P8 to P9 per passenger for regular trips and an additional P1 for every kilometer thereafter for special trips.

The new Quezon City tricycle fare rates are as follows:

a.       Regular trips will be charged nine pesos (P9.00) for the first kilometer and an additional P1 for every kilometer thereafter;

b.       Special trips will be charged P18.00 and an additional P1 for every kilometer thereafter; and,

c.       Senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students who enjoy a 20 percent discount rate will be charged P7.20 for every regular trip, plus fifty centavos for every kilometer thereafter for regular trips. They will be charged P14.40 for the first kilometer plus fifty centavos for every kilometer thereafter for special trips.

“Seven years had passed and despite the increase in fuel commodities since 2011, particularly in December 2016 when the average price for gasoline was listed at P46.30 based on the Department of Energy Oil Monitor, and the swelling demand for its services, fare in tricycles for hire has not been increased,” according to the ordinance.

There are 24,700 registered tricycles in Quezon City.

Violators of the new fare policy shall be fined P5,000 or be imprisoned for six months, or both. — LDF, GMA News
