Residents enjoy Manila Bay’s ‘Baseco Beach’ despite water pollution
Several residents swam and went on a picnic on a stretch of Manila Bay dubbed "Baseco Beach" despite the amount of trash still in the water, according to a report by Bernadette Reyes on Balitanghali.
Despite barangay officials' warnings, several people including children plunged into the polluted water, even collecting trash as they swam.
Barangay official Mary Joy Campanera said different agencies have started coordinating with barangay officials for the planned relocation of families residing near Baseco Beach.
Barangay officials suggested relocating them within the same barangay so that they could keep their livelihoods.
Some of the residents, however, opposed the relocation, while others were in favor as long as the government provides them a decent house.
Meanwhile, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Benny Antiporda said that they are still studying if it is possible to relocate these residents within the same barangay.
He also said that they are actually planning to move these residents to a relocation site in Naic, Cavite. — Joviland Rita/BM, GMA News
