One piggery getting in way of ASF-free Barangay Commonwealth, says Joy Belmonte
One piggery in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City is getting in the way of the barangay being declared free of the African swine fever.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte told GMA News that a hog-raiser, who owns ten pigs, refused to have them culled.
She said 154 hogs in Barangay Commonwealth have already been culled
“We’ll get back to him to file charges. Commonwealth cleared of pigs except for that one piggery,” Belmonte said.
If the hog-raiser continues to be uncooperative, Belmonte said the could be forcibly culled without judicial proceedings since the piggery was a public nuisance under Sec. 699(3) of the Civil Code.
The culling, she said, will be a summary abatement of nuisance and may be done with police assistance.”
“We may also arrest him on the spot for a criminal offense under Sec. 85(f) of the Sanitation Code, ‘Animal stockage maintained in a manner injurious to health.’” Belmonte said. —NB, GMA News
