Noisy mufflers not allowed in Pasay City, mayor reminds motorists

The mayor of Pasay City on Monday stressed that noisy mufflers are banned in the city by an ordinance passed in June.

In a statement, Pasay Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said noisy exhaust systems on all types of vehicles, including motorcycles and tricycles, are strictly prohibited under Ordinance 6009 or the Anti-Modified Tail Pipe Ordinance.

“Excessive noise is a serious hazard to the public health and welfare, and that, exposure to certain levels of noise can result in physiological, psychological and economic damage,” the ordinance states.

“Any sound becomes unwanted when it either interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, conversation or disrupts or diminishes one’s quality life,” it added.

The Pasay City government said all vehicles have built-in silencers to reduce the noise created by the engine, but some motorists remove this mechanism to replace it with a noisy exhaust system.

Drivers who are caught violating the ordinance will be fined between P2,000 and P4,000 and may possibly have their driver’s license and business franchise revoked. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
