Immigration detains Chinese man who spat on Manila cop
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has detained the Chinese man who recently plowed through vehicles in an attempt to escape apprehension for a traffic violation and spat on a police officer in Manila.
Zhou Zhiyi, 50, is locked up at the bureau's detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig City after immigration agents arrested him for violating the Philippine Immigration Act, the BI said Wednesday.
Zhou, who entered the country as a tourist last November 11 and was admitted only for 30 days, will be charged for overstaying and being an undesirable alien, the bureau said.
Prior to the BI arrest at the Manila Police District's headquarters in Manila, the man had been granted bail on another charge, the bureau said.
"I immediately dispatched a team of operatives from our Intelligence Division to effect his immediate arrest so he could also be charged for violating our immigration laws," BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.
BI acting intelligence chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. said Zhou was already overstaying when the spitting incident occurred on February 6.
The man, who was driving an SUV, reportedly attempted to escape a traffic officer who had flagged him for a coding violation. He slammed into three motorcycles, one e-tricycle, and one car before he was caught.
Video also shows him spitting on a police officer. A search of his car reportedly yielded a sachet of suspected shabu. —Nicole-Anne C. Lagrimas/KG, GMA News
