Cascolan: IAS directed to probe altercation between cop, female Grab driver

The Philippine National Police's Internal Affairs Service has stepped in to investigate the incident involving Police Captain Ronald Saquilayan, the cop in the viral video having an altercation with a female Grab driver in Taguig City, PNP chief Police General Camilo Pancratius Cascolan said Monday.

"IAS has already been directed to investigate the case properly so we would be able to know what to do with our people. Kakasuhan ba natin, sila ba ay tama, sino nagkamali, 'yan po ay titingnan natin lahat-lahat," Cascolan said at a press briefing.

Last week, female driver Florence Norial, 26, was arrested outside a commercial establishment for allegedly hurting Saquilayan, which she said was an act of self-defense because the police officer had pushed her during their confrontation.

Southern Police District (SPD) chief Police Brigadier General Emmanuel Peralta said CCTV footage would show that Norial was the one who assaulted the police officer after she had asked Saquilayan to move his vehicle that was supposedly blocking a pick-up area.

A spot report from SPD also stated that Norial became unruly so she was arrested by Saquilayan.

Norial's boyfriend, Mirza Miguel Shahzad, insisted that the driver did not threaten the cop. He also said their camp was never given the chance to seek assistance from a legal counsel during the arrest. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
