69% of PUVS in Metro Manila allowed to operate —LTFRB

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has already allowed around 69% of the public utility vehicles (PUVs) in Metro Manila to operate, chairperson Martin Delgra III said.

In a Palace briefing on Thursday, Delgra said that the agency is keeping a timeline for increasing the number of PUVS allowed back on the road, as well as the allowed passenger capacity.

According to Delgra, more PUVs will be allowed in two to three weeks.

“Isang aspeto to increase capacity is adding more units,” he said.

“But the other is also having that unit run on the road longer than they would want to or they would need to kasi nga walang kumpyansa sa pagpapatakbo,” he added.

On Tuesday, the LTFRB opened 44 more routes and allowed 4,820 more public utility jeepney (PUJ) units to operate in Metro Manila after months of suspension.

According to the LTFRB, the following are the total number of operating routes and units for several modes of public transportation that have been allowed in Metro Manila:

  • traditional public utility jeepney (PUJ) – 302 routes with 27,016 units
  • modern PUJ – 48 routes with 845 units
  • public utility bus (PUB) – 34 routes with 4,016 units
  • point-to-point bus – 34 routes with 387 units
  • UV Express – 76 routes with 3,263 units
  • taxi – 20,927 units
  • transport network vehicles services (TNVS) – 24,356 units
  • provincial public utility bus (PUB) – 12 routes with  286 units
