MRT3 train goes on 50-kph trial run
The Manila Rail Transit 3 (MRT3) on Thursday attempted traveling a distance of 16.7 kilometers at 50 kph using the new overhauled light rail vehicle, according to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras.”
“Kaya nagsa-simulation tayo ngayon kasi ang last na takbo natin ng 50 kph is sometime September 2014,” MRT3 director for operations Mike Capati said.
As it was only a simulation, the MRT3 barely stopped between stations and was able to travel from North Avenue Station to Taft Avenue Station in only 37 minutes.
“Ayos na ‘yung mga riles, mas smooth ‘yung travel mo at dahil nga bagong overhaul ‘yung bagon, hindi siya katulad nung dati na mainit tapos may tumutulo,” Transportation undersecretary Goddes Hope Libiran said.
However, the travel time under normal operations will be around one hour as the MRT3 will have to stop at every station. This will be 10 minutes faster compared to the usual speed of 37 kph.
“Syempre, mapapabilis ang takbo natin, ‘yung waiting time ng mga pasahero, iikli, mas marami tayong mga pasaherong masasakay,” Capati said.
The MRT3 will operate at 50 kph starting November 3. This is set to further increase to 60 kph in December. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
