The “senseless” killing of Judge Ma. Theresa Abadilla inside her own Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) office on Wednesday is the latest in a string of “gross violations of justice” that have occurred under the Duterte administration, her law sorority said.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Portia Sorority said Abadilla’s killing by her own clerk of court highlights the need for reform within the Philippine government.

“Her death abruptly put an end to the exemplary work that she has done; it is a stark reminder of the numerous gross violations of justice that have occurred under this administration,” the sorority said in a statement.

“Her senseless death serves as a testament to the urgent need for reform within our government,” it added.

UP Portia also said Abadilla will be remembered for her “tireless contributions to the judiciary,” first as a Supreme Court clerk then as Manila RTC Branch 45 judge.

The sorority also called on the public to avoid sharing graphic videos of the moments following Abadilla’s killing.

“As we mourn for Sis Tessa, and as her family deals with this tragic news, we humbly ask that we respect her memory and protect the family’s privacy,” it said.

Abadilla was declared dead on arrival at a Manila hospital.

Her killer was allegedly a COVID-19 survivor who suffered depression. He took his own life shortly after claiming Abadilla’s.
