88-year-old grandma trapped with grandkids, including special child, rescued in Marikina

An 88-year-old woman called to be rescued on Thursday as floodwaters brought by Typhoon Ulysses submerged several houses in Marikina City.

Interviewed on “State of the Nation with Jessica Soho,” Rita Velasco said they were trapped on the third floor of their neighbor’s house amid the onslaught of Ulysses.

Together with her were her three grandchildren, including a special child.

They were eventually rescued by local authorities.

“Kami po ay lubog na lubog po sa tubig. Lahat po ay basa tapos ‘yong aming tindahan ay naanod ng baha. Wala man lang kami naisagip. Walang pagkain,” Velasco said.

She called on the public for donations of food, water and clothes as they were not able to save some of their belongings due to the raging flood.

Earlier, the Marikina City Public Information Office said Marikina River’s water level rose to 22 meters on Thursday morning, which is higher than the 21.5 meters during Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009. -- Ma. Angelica Garcia/BAP, GMA News
