In a Facebook post, MMC mourned the death of Avila, who was at the forefront of the hospital's operations during the COVID-19 crisis.

"We honor health warrior Jose Maria 'Joey' Avila, MD, who dedicated the latter years of his life leading MMC's Department of Pathology and Laboratories," read the post.

"Losing another one of our physicians to COVID-19 is yet another painful reminder of what this pandemic is taking away from us: a briliant pathologist, a passionate leader, a beloved family man and a devoted friend," MMC added.

In 2020, MMC's  cardiologist Roberto Anastacio also died due to the severe viral illness.

As of Wednesday, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 962,307 coronavirus disease infections, with 116,434 active cases, 829,608 recoveries and  16,265 fatalities. —Consuelo Marquez/LDF, GMA News
