1-year-old child killed after spanking by 18-year-old mother

A one-year-old was killed after repeatedly receiving a spanking with a piece of wood from the 18-year-old mother in Barangay Upper Bicutan in Taguig on Tuesday night.

In Emil Sumangil’s report on “24 Oras,” the grandmother of the victim said she did not know the motive behind the crime.

“Hindi ko alam sa kaniya kasi hindi naman nagasasalita ‘yung anak ko sa akin. Bigla na lang po ako nagulat may mga tumawg na pong taga center na sabi nga po wala na daw po ‘yung apo ko,” the grandmother said.

[I don’t know because my daughter doesn’t tell me anything. Someone from the center just suddenly called me to tell me about my grandchild’s death.]

“Sabi lang po niya na pinalo-palo lang daw niya,” she added.

[She just said she repeatedly hit [my grandchild].]

Investigation showed that no less than 10 wounds and bruises were found on the child’s body.

“Sa nakikita natin dahil sa pag hampas ng matigas na bagay, hindi nakayann ng bata, no, dahil pasa-pasa nga ‘yung katawan ng bata. Hindi lamang isang beses, dalawang beses, kundi maraming beses na hinampas niya ng isang kahoy itong bata,” Police Colonel Celso Rodriguez, Taguig Police chief, said.

[The child’s body could not handle the spaning. There are many bruises on the body. She hit the child not only once, not only twice, but numerous times with a wooden object.]

Authorities said the suspect got annoyed with the cries of her child.

The investigation also showed that this was not the first time the victim was hurt by the suspect.
