MMDA advises supporters to avoid littering during campaign rallies

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday called on supporters of 2022 election candidates to avoid littering when participating in campaign rallies.

“Ini-encourage natin yung mga supporters ng atin pong mga kandidato na iwasan po yung pagkakalat (We are encouraging the supporters of our candidates to avoid littering),” MMDA officer-in-charge General Manager Romando Artes said in a radio interview.

Artes said personnel from MMDA's Metro Parkways Clearing Group (MPCG) and Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group (SCOG) are following the trail of trash during such activities.

Earlier, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu reminded candidates to be environmentally conscious with the start of the campaign period on February 8.

Cimatu reminded the candidates to properly segregate their campaign materials and dispose them properly.

The DENR and concerned government agencies signed a joint memorandum circular that urged  political parties, party-list groups, and individual candidates to enforce the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 for the "Basura-Free Elections."

During the campaign period for the 2019 elections, the MMDA collected 29 truckloads or 200.37 tons of discarded election-related materials from March 1 to May 16— Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA News
