DOTr: 550 units now used for EDSA Busway

The Department of Transportation has increased the number of units using the EDSA Busway to 550, its official said on Wednesday.

At a public briefing, DOTr Undersecretary Mark Pastor that department is planning to add more units in light of the possible influx of passengers during the "ber" months.

“Nasa 550 authorized units ang deployed po sa  EDSA Busway. May 100 additional rescue units pa tayo. Ito ay tinitingnan natin kung dadagdagan pa po natin lalo na itong ber months,” he said.

(Around 550 authorized units have been deployed in EDSA. We have 100 additional rescue units. We are still looking into adding more, especially during these "ber" months.)

Previously, the EDSA Busway only had 500 units in operation.

Pastor said the DOTr is planning to expand and add more stations in areas with heavy volume of passengers, such as Kamuning, Guadalupe, and Monumento.

Earlier, Secretary Jaime Bautista ordered a study on the possible privatization of the EDSA Busway. The study will determine the advantages in giving the busway system operations to the private sector.

The government has been offering free rides on EDSA Busway under its “Libreng Sakay” program, which is set to end on December 31, 2022.

Under the program, the government hires buses to provide free rides to commuters. — BM, GMA News
