Muntinlupa placed under state of calamity due to Paeng

The City of Muntinlupa has been placed under state of calamity following the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng.

According to Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon on Wednesday, Resolution No. 10 s. 2022, which recommends the declaration of state of calamity relative to the effects and damage of Paeng, was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod last October 31.

The resolution authorizes the utilization of the available appropriations under the 30% Quick Response Fund from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) and such funds appropriated for various repair, rehabilitation, related works, intervention, and relief to be done that will facilitate the normalcy of the city.

In a Facebook post, Biazon said this would help hasten the city's relief operations as well as repair and rehabilitation efforts.

"Sa mga panahon gaya nito, mahalaga ang mabilis na pagkilos para maisaayos at maibalik sa dati ang mga naapektuhan ng nakaraang delubyo," Biazon said.

(In times like this, immediate response is important so that those affected can return to normalcy.)

Based on assessment reports, Biazon said two individuals died due to Paeng. He added that eight out of the nine barangays in Muntinlupa were flooded and that 1,200 families or more than 5,000 individuals were needed to be evacuated.

Biazon also said there were incidents of illnesses in evacuation and health centers.

Paeng battered most parts of the country over the weekend, affecting 3,180,132 individuals or 927,822 families, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The agency said the reported death toll due to Paeng has climbed to 121, with 92 of them confirmed. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
