QCPD arrests UP prof over alleged non-remittance of SSS contributions; orgs call for her release

A University of the Philippines professor was arrested Monday by Quezon City Police District  for alleged non-remittance of Social Security System contributions.

An initial report by QCPD-Criminal Investigation Detection Unit showed that Professor Melania Flores, former president of All U.P. Academic Employees Union (AUAEU) and resident of UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City, was arrested around 11 a.m.

Flores was a subject of a warrant of arrest for alleged violation Section 22 (a) in relation to Section 22 (d) and Section 28 (e) under Republic Act 8282.

She was brought to Camp Karingal for investigation.

In a Facebook post, human rights group Karapatan National Capital Region said two female and two male police officers in civilian clothes went to the house of Flores and posed as employees of the Department of Social Work and Development.

The police officers showed the warrant of arrest when Flores opened the gate of her house.

Different organizations such as the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), AUAEU, UP Diliman University Student Council, and UP Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas called for the release of Flores.

They said the arrest was in violation of the UP-Department of the Interior and Local Government (UP-DILG) Accord of 1992 as the police entered the campus without any coordination with the UP Diliman administration.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
