Rider in viral Makati road rage video now in custody —SPD

The motorcycle rider seen pinned down by a policeman in a viral video during a traffic altercation in Makati City has surrendered to authorities, police said Friday.

In a statement, the Southern Police District (SPD) said Angelito Rencio turned himself in to the police to shed light on the complaint filed against him and to ensure his safety.

Rencio is currently under the custody of the Makati City Police Station, according to the SPD.

In a viral video captured on August 25, Rencio can be seen pinned on the ground at the corner of Arnaiz Road and Osmeña Highway in an apparent road rage incident with Police Staff Sergeant Marsan Dolipas.

Dolipas is seen holding his gun while trying to keep Rencio down.

Rencio reportedly told Makati police investigators that he was a retired intelligence operative for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The Philippine Army, however, denied having him on its roster.

He also asked to be allowed to leave the police precinct supposedly so he could get the papers for the gun found on him.

At least two Makati police officers have been relieved of their duties for allowing Rencio to leave the station.

Dolipas has filed a complaint of usurpation of authority, illegal possession of firearms, and resisting arrest with the Makati Prosecutors Office.

On Thursday, SPD chief Police Brigadier General Roderick Mariano said Rencio has standing warrants for qualified theft, usurpation of authority, and other cases.

"We are verifying if he has already posted bail," Mariano said. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
