7 of 9 escapees from Manila jail recaptured - police
Seven of the nine detainees who escaped from a Manila detention facility have been recaptured, according to the police on Thursday.
MPD spokesperson Police Major Philip Ines told GMA News Online that the seven men who escaped from Manila Police District (MPD) Station 1 on early Wednesday morning are now under their custody.
Two escapees are still at large.
The nine persons under police custody are facing various charges that include illegal drugs, robbery and illegal possession of firearms.
It was around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when the detainees pried open several worn down steel bars of the jail facility.
After the incident, authorities have welded additional steel bars to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
There is an ongoing investigation to determine how the cops manning the station were caught unaware of the jailbreak that occurred next to the desk officer post and the area being monitored by CCTV camera.
In hot water are the station commander, his deputy, the duty officer and the policemen on duty at the time of the jailbreak. All have been administratively relieved.
Visitation rights for the remaining 100 detainees at the station’s jail facility are currently suspended.—RF, GMA Integrated News
