81-year-old beaten to death by grandson in Manila

An 81-year-old man in Sta. Ana, Manila City was beaten to death by his own grandson, according to a 24 Oras report by Jun Veneracion on Tuesday.

Authorities identified the victim as Jesus Rivera Sr., who suffered multiple wounds to his head and face. He passed away on the evening of Holy Monday while being treated at a hospital.

The Manila police quoted witnesses as saying that Rivera was upset when he stepped out of their home. He was then confronted by the suspect, his 27-year-old grandson Reymart Tanghal.

"Lumabas itong lolo at nagwawala sa labas ng bahay. Nagsasalita, nagmumura doon. Lumabas itong apo niya at sunod-sunod na sinuntok itong lolo. Bumagsak ito," said Manila Police Spokesperson Police Major Philipp Ines.

(The grandfather went outside the house in a fit of rage. He was talking, cursing. The grandson stepped out then repeatedly punched his grandfather, who later fell on the ground.)

Even when the victim was already hurt, his grandson allegedly did not relent in his attack.

"Nang bumagsak, tumayo [ang lolo]. Tinulak [ng suspect], tumama ang head sa matigas na bagay at kahit nahimatay na 'yung lolo, tuloy-tuloy pa rin na ginawa niya 'yun," Ines added.

(When he fell, [the grandfather] stood up. [The suspect] pushed him, then his head hit a hard object. Even when Rivera became unconscious, the grandson continued to hurt the victim.)

Rivera's family claimed that the Tanghal was a drug user, and that this was not the first time that the latter hurt his own grandfather.

"Masakit talaga. Hindi po namin matanggap, lalong lalo na pamangkin ko 'yun. Anak ng ate ko. Pero, pakukulong namin siya habang maaga. Batotoy, sumuko ka na. Baka saan ka pa mapunta," said the victim's son, Jesus Rivera Jr.

(It really hurts. This is difficult to accept, especially since my nephew is involved. He's the son of my sister. But we'll put him behind bars at the soonest. Batotoy, please surrender. You might end up somewhere else.)

The suspect remains at large. The police is set to file parricide charges against him. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
