Rider dead after being run over by pickup in Pasay City
A 59-year-old motorcycle rider died after he was hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of Bayshore Avenue and Diokno Boulevard in Pasay City last Sunday.
According to Darlene Cay’s report in 24 Oras on Thursday, the victim’s son said his father was on his way to work when the incident happened in the morning of February 9.
“Yung nabanga yung tatay ko, tinatawagan siya ng pinsan ko. Tapos enforcer po pala ‘yun, sabi nadisgrasya yung tatay ko. Tinawagan din ako ng pinsan ko, kaya pumunta po ako doon agad. Na-shock po ako, hindi ko alam yung gagawin ko,” the victim's son said.
(After my dad's accident, my cousin called him. It was answered by an enforcer who said my father was in an accident. My cousin called me, so I went to the scene. I did not know what to do because I was in shock.)
The victim was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
His family was surprised with his untimely death as they were preparing for his 60th birthday celebration this coming May.
“Malambing siya, mabait siya sa akin pati sa ibang kapatid ko,” the son added.
(He was caring and kind to my siblings and I.)
Police investigation revealed both the pickup and the motorcycle were about to turn right at the intersection.
“At that time na mag go-go, naka-move ng 3 to 5 meters yung Hilux, naramdaman niya, umangat yung kaliwang gulong niya sa front, ayun na yun, nangyari na yung bungguan nila,” said Police Captain Alvin Bagay, Pasay Vehicular Traffic Investigation head.
(When the traffic light was about to turn green, the Hilux moved 3 to 5 meters, the driver felt that his left front wheel suddenly lifted, that’s when the accident happened.)
The pickup driver told the investigator that he did not notice the motorcycle rider, but authorities found that he was under the influence of alcohol during the accident.
“Base sa record namin, dahil pina-medical namin, may content ng alak yung tao. According dun sa mga kasama nila, kumain daw sila sa restaurant. Yung girlfriend niya sabi niya na nakainom din siya ng kaunti,” said Bagay.
(Based on our record, a medical examination revealed alcohol was present in the suspect. According to his companions, they just came from a restaurant. His girlfriend even said that he drank alcohol.)
The suspect is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, damage to property, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Nakakagalit kasi bakit nagda- drive ng lasing? Definitely, magpu-pursue kami ng case kasi namatay tatay ko. So dapat lang na may hustisya yung tatay ko,” the victim’s son said.
(It’s infuriating because why do you have to drive under the influence of alcohol? Definitely, we will pursue filing a case because my dad died. It's only proper that my dad receives justice.)
The victim’s family is also seeking further evidence including dashcam videos of the vehicles present at the accident. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
