LRT-2 operations affected by technical glitch

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) announced on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 that operations of its Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) were affected by a technical problem.

LRTA administrator Atty. Hernando Cabrera said there was a problem in the transformer no. 5 and no. 6 located in Santolan and Anonas areas.

Their team was already on site to do repairs as of posting time.

For the meantime, LRT-2 operations were to be limited to Cubao and Recto and Recto to Cubao starting at 7 a.m. or earlier.

"So habang nire-resolve namin ito, isang riles lang ang pwede naming gamitin kaya minabuti namin na 'yung mga tren, ipunta muna lahat doon sa may within sa Cubao and Recto segment para doon muna tayo mag-o-operate ng tinatawag natin na degraded operations," Cabrera said on Unang Balita.

(So while we are resolving this, only one railway could be used. So we felt it best to have all the trains operate within the Cubao and Recto segments in what we call degraded operations.)

"Ang target natin dito is alas-siyete [ng umaga] or earlier, makapag-operate tayo between Cubao and Recto and between Recto pabalik ng Cubao," he added.

(Our target is that by 7 a.m. or earlier, we can operate between Cubao and Recto and between Recto and Cubao.)

"In the meantime, wala muna tayong biyahe mula Cubao hanggang Antipolo at Antipolo pabalik ng Cubao habang nire-resolve namin 'yung problema namin sa power transformer namin," Cabrera said.

(In the meantime, we won't have trips yet from Cubao to Antipolo and Antipolo to Cubao while we are resolving the problem with the power transformer.)

The LRTA official said they are targeting to finish the repair work this morning and have normal operations thereafter.

Cabrera apologized to the public for the inconvenience the incident has caused.

Full operations resumed before noon on Wednesday.

Degraded operations

At 6:45 a.m., the degraded operations started at the LRT-2 Araneta Center Cubao Station, according to a report by James Agustin on Unang Balita.

Before then, passengers waited outside the station for the gates to open. Some passengers got worried that they would be late for work.

The LRTA earlier said its operations on Wednesday, June 25, would be delayed and would start at 6 a.m. due to a technical problem.

The train typically begins operations at 5 a.m.

LRT-2 operates with 13 stations from west to east of Metro Manila.

The LRTA later announced on Wednesday morning that it will offer free LRT-2 rides to commuters on Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Free bus and shuttle rides were also given by the LRTA, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and Philippine Coast Guard to stranded LRT-2 passengers on Wednesday. —LDF/KG, GMA Integrated News
