DPWH: 30-year old Navotas floodgate needs rehabilitation

Navotas City floodgate

Despite being repaired, the 30-year-old floodgate in Navotas City needs to be rehabilitated, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Sunday.

“Yung floodgate na yan, lumang-luma na yan. I think it's about 30 years old na yan. So, kailangan irehabilitate ng husto,” DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan told Super Radyo dzBB.

(The floodgate is really old. I think it's about 30 years old. So, it needs to be thoroughly rehabilitated.)

In an earlier dzBB report, a house was heavily damaged while five others were affected after a three-meter wall in Barangay San Jose collapsed as a result of the water from the high tide.

The water also breached the sandbag wall, the Navotas local government unit said.

Bonoan shared the DPWH is working on a feasibility study with Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco on replacing the floodgate.

“Gumagawa kami ngayon ng (we’re working on a) feasibility study on how we are going to replace it, but in the meantime, operational pa naman iyan ngayon (it’s still operational),” Bonoan said.

For now, Bonoan said, DPWH is “closely monitoring” and maintaining the floodgate.

The Navotas local government unit (LGU) on Sunday warned residents that several areas have flooded after a portion of the river wall collapsed due to the high tide in Manila Bay.
