WW2 bombs, Japanese grenade unearthed at UP College of Medicine compound

Two vintage bombs and one Japanese hand grenade were recovered inside a school compound in Manila on Monday, according to the police.

The Manila Police District-District Explosive and Canine Unit (MPD-DECU) said construction workers discovered the corroded weapons during excavation for a septic tank inside the compound of UP College of Medicine in Manila.

“Naghuhukay sila para sa new septic tank ng UP College of Medicine building. Immediately, nag-proceed po kami doon to recover or conduct render safety procedures doon sa mga sinasabing vintage bombs,” MPD-DECU team leader Police Chief Master Sergeant Ernesto Rivera Jr. said in a report of GMA Integrated News’ Jhomer Apresto on Unang Balita on Tuesday.

Employees and construction workers were evacuated and authorities cordoned off the area.

The vintage bombs and the grenade were recovered safely.

According to Rivera, if the construction workers hit the vintage bombs, it may trigger an explosion affecting up to 16 meters of the area reaching Taft Avenue.

“Delikado pa rin. Hindi naman ibig sabihin na natatagpuan natin in corroded condition siya, kalawang, wala na siyang explosive fillers sa loob, meron pa rin po 'yun,” he said.

(It's still dangerous. It doesn't mean that we found it in a corroded condition, rusty, it no longer has explosive fillers inside, it's still there.)

Rivera said vintage bombs are usually discovered in Intramuros and Manila Bay.
