Fatalities in Marikina gun factory explosion now 2

The number of deaths in the explosion of a gun factory in Marikina City has increased to two, according to the company on Tuesday.

“It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of two of our valued employees following an explosion that occurred in the early afternoon of July 7, 2025 at the Ammunition Section of Armscor Global Defense Inc.'s manufacturing plant in Marikina City,” Armscor chairperson, president, and CEO Martin Tuason said in a statement.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and vowed to give them assistance.

“Our most profound sympathies and condolences are with the family and loved ones of the deceased during this very difficult time,” Tuason said.

“All the necessary assistance and support is being extended to the family of the deceased,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tuason said the third employee who was also hurt in the explosion has been discharged from the hospital and is now at home with his family.

Initial investigation by the Marikina City Police disclosed that a box containing primer suddenly exploded, injuring the three workers

In firearms, the primer is the chemical or device responsible for initiating the propellant combustion that will propel the projectiles out of the gun barrel.

The victims were immediately brought to Amang Rodriguez Medical Center.

Due to the extent of the injuries, one of them had both hands amputated but died eventually as confirmed by a relative. Meanwhile, the other two required medical attention to the chest and an eye.

Another explosion at the gun factory’s storage unit for gun powders occurred in February last year which led to a fire.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate that in all its decades of operation, AGDI has been fully and strictly compliant with all applicable international standards and industry practices, along with local regulations as well as inspections conducted by the Philippine National Police,” Tuason said.

“Each and every employee is a valued member of the AGDI family, and as such, their safety and welfare are, and have always been, our top priority,” he added.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
