MMDA tells La Salle Green Hills: Address heavy traffic near school
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has called on the administration of La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) in Mandaluyong City to address the heavy traffic congestion near the school caused by student service vehicles.
In a letter to the LSGH administration dated August 18, MMDA Chairperson Romando "Don" Artes reiterated concern regarding "continuing traffic congestion in the vicinity" of the school, particularly along Ortigas Avenue.
"We strongly urge your administration to implement stricter internal traffic management measures and wish to re-emphasize the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations," Artes' letter read.
It added, "We also encourage closer coordination with our office to develop and implement joint traffic management strategies to mitigate congestion and ensure the safety and convenience of all road users."
Data from the MMDA showed the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) monitored a total of 938 traffic violations from July 18 to August 14 in the area. Meanwhile, a total of 403 violations were reported from July 11 to July 17.
Reported infractions include illegal parking, obstruction, and unauthorized loading and non-loading during the peak school hours.
"These violations directly contribute to severe traffic congestion, compromising not only the efficient flow of vehicles but also public safety and commuter welfare along this major thoroughfare," the letter read.
The MMDA also urged the LSGH management to coordinate with the agency to create joint traffic management strategies that would address the heavy traffic, and ensure the safety and convenience of motorists.
Four-point strategy
LSGH, on the other hand, said that it has implemented a four-point strategy to ease the traffic along Ortigas.
The school said that it has already sent a letter to Artes regarding MMDA’s concern.
“The school has also reminded motorists going to the campus to strictly observe the traffic regulations set by the MMDA,” the statement read.
“LSGH is committed to work with the MMDA, and with the cooperation of parents, guardians, and stakeholders, to provide sustainable solutions to improve traffic flow while ensuring the safety and well-being of its students.”
In the letter sent by LSGH president Br. Edmundo L. Fernandez FSC sent on Wednesday, among the strategies by the school include partnering with the Greenhills East Village Association to allow access within the village and maximize the use of school gates; using the football field as an additional drop-off and pick-up area; revising class schedules; and increasing the number of accredited school buses and encouraging carpooling. — Sundy Locus and Vince Angelo Ferreras/ VDV/RF, GMA Integrated News
