Mali the elephant's taxidermy specimen to be moved to National Museum

The taxidermy specimen of Mali the elephant will soon be brought to a new home, the National Museum of Natural History, said Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso on Wednesday.

The mayor said the decision for the move was made following concerns raised by netizens.

(The city has limited capabilities and resources for this type of care. At the National Museum, we are confident that Mali will be better preserved and seen by future generations, because the preserved remains will be safe, within a controlled environment, and at appropriate temperature.)

Mali, who is also known as Vishwa Ma’ali, has been Manila Zoo’s resident elephant for more than 40 years. She was a gift from the Sri Lankan government to then First Lady Imelda Marcos.

Following her death in November 2023, her taxidermy specimen was brought back to Manila Zoo for display in December last year.

The National Museum of Natural History is also home to Lolong, which was recognized by Guinness World Records as the “largest saltwater crocodile in captivity.” — BAP, GMA Integrated News
