PNP denies firing gun, using tear gas during September 21 protest
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday that none of its personnel fired a gun or used tear gas during the protests at Mendiola on Sunday.
According to Chino Gaston’s report on “24 Oras”, the police said that it was the rogue protesters who threw molotov cocktails.
“Wala, hindi natin gagawin ‘yun at kung sana mayroong nangyari, may report na tayo na may ganyang incident,” said Manila Police District (MPD) spokesperson Police Major Philipp Ines.
(It’s nothing, we cannot do that, and if such a thing happened, we should already have a report on the incident.)
A video went viral online wherein some members of MPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics team allegedly pointed a gun at a protester wearing a black shirt. There is also a video making the rounds on the Internet showing a person with a bleeding head lying on the ground.
For its part, the MPD said that the PNP has yet to receive a report about a police shooting or a protester who died in the rally.
PNP data showed that over 100 cops were injured, with about 20 admitted to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health said that 48 individuals were brought to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center on Sunday. One died due to stabbing, but the MPD is still investigating if it has something to do with the protests. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
