LTO revokes license of UV Express driver in Commonwealth road crash

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Saturday said it has revoked the license of the UV Express Driver who slammed into 12 motorcycles and two cars, killing one and injuring others along Commonwealth Avenue.

According to a Facebook post by the agency, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said perpetual disqualification was imposed on the driver's license, following the order of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez.

The LTO said the driver also admitted to the Quezon City Police District that he used illegal drugs on Thursday night, a few hours before he travelled on Friday morning.

“Sisiguraduhin nating hindi na makakapagmaneho itong UV Express driver. Paulit-ulit nang sinasabi ng Pangulo na dapat ligtas ang ating mga kalsada at mga motorista mula sa mga ganitong klaseng driver lalo’t pag may buhay na nawala bunga ng kanilang iresponsableng pagmamaneho,” Lopez said.

(We will ensure that this UV Express driver will no longer be able to drive. The President has repeatedly said that our roads and motorists should be safe from these types of drivers, especially when lives have been lost as a result of their irresponsible driving.)

The UV Express driver is currently detained at the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit.

The suspect is facing multiple charges, including Reckless Driving, Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving, Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle and others.

According to a report by Sandra Aguinaldo on GMA News 24 Oras on Friday, video footage showed the UV Express continued on its way even after it hit the vehicles.

A truck tried to block its path, but it managed to make it to a U-turn slot.

The authorities caught up with the UV driver, who was brought to Sector 5 of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit. —Jamil Santos/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
