PNP eyes liquor, gun ban for Nazareno 2026

The Philippine National Police in the National Capital Region (NCRPO) is seeking the implementation of a liquor ban and the temporary suspension of permits to carry firearms to ensure security during the Traslacion on Friday for the Feast of Jesus Nazareno.

In a press briefing on Monday, NCRPO chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin said they have lodged the requests with the Manila city government and the PNP national headquarters.

“Of course, kasama sa ordinansa na ipapatupad po natin ay yung pag-inom. And as a matter of fact, ni-request po natin sa City Government of Manila na magkaroon po ng liquor ban during the activity,” Aberin said.

(Of course, the ordinance we will implement includes drinking. As a matter of fact, we have requested the City Government of Manila to impose a liquor ban during the activity.)

“We have also requested the national headquarters for the suspension of the permit to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR), effective January 8 to January 10,” he added.

Aside from these measures, Aberin said the police also asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to implement signal disruptions in areas covered by the Traslacion, which is the procession of the image of Jesus Christ from Quirino Grandstand and back to Quiapo Church.

He added that a no-fly zone over the concerned areas was also requested from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

The Traslacion commemorates the arrival of the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Our Lord Jesus the Nazarene) from Acapulco, Mexico in the 1600s, as well as its transfer from Bagumbayan (now Luneta) to Quiapo Church–St. John the Baptist Parish in 1767.

The PNP earlier said that around 15,000 police officers will be deployed to secure the activity.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
