At least half of the fire that has been burning for nearly three weeks at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill has been put out, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said Tuesday.

Dizon said around 50% of the blaze has been contained following an inspection at the landfill, according to a report of GTV’s Balitanghali.

He was joined by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Acting Secretary Mitch Cuna, officials from the Navotas local government unit, and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya.

According to Dizon, about 90% of the landfill’s 44-hectare area has been affected by the fire.

Despite progress in containment, the DPWH has yet to provide a timeline on when the fire will be fully extinguished.

The Navotas Sanitary Landfill fire started last April 10.

Meanwhile, the DENR said the landfill’s former operator has committed to submit a Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan.

On Monday, the Manila City government advised its residents anew to wear face masks amid the “very unhealthy” air quality due to the massive fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill. —Joviland Rita/RF, GMA News
