10-year-old boy dies after SUV runs over him in Quezon City
A 10-year-old boy died after being run over by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Barangay Balingasa, Quezon City, on Friday evening.
According to James Agustin's report on "Balitanghali" on Monday, CCTV footage and the police investigation showed that the child was run over twice.
"Humiga siya sa kalsada and then umupo, hanggang sa dumating yung SUV na minamaneho ng ating suspek," said Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 1 Commander Police Lieutenant Jason Santoceldes.
"Tila hindi niya napansin yung bata dahil medyo pababa 'yung kalsada hanggang sa nagulungan niya 'yung biktima natin na bata," he added.
(He lay down on the road and then sat up until the SUV driven by the suspect arrived. It appears the driver did not notice the child because the road slopes downward, causing him to run over the young victim.)
The boy was rushed to the hospital but later died.
The 55-year-old SUV driver was taken into the custody of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 1. He said he was driving home when the incident happened and did not see the child.
"'Di ko talaga nakita. Humihingi lang ako ng tawad sa nangyari. Hindi ko kagustuan 'yon, aksidente lang talaga," the driver said.
(I really didn't see him. I just want to apologize for what happened. I never intended it; it was truly just an accident.)
The driver has been charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
Authorities said the suspect has undergone inquest proceedings, with the resolution still pending.
The victim's wake is being held in Quezon City. Relatives said he was a Grade 5 student and the youngest of four siblings.
