Man charged for shooting 4 players after basketball game


MANILA, Philippines – A 22-year-old man was charged on Wednesday with attempted murder for allegedly shooting four members of a basketball team in 2006. Assistant City Prosecutor Leoncio Suarez Jr. filed the complaint at the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) against suspect Virgilio M. Ramirez, a resident of Vitas Tenement in Tondo, Manila. The court set bail at P120,000. The complainants are Roberto O. Insur, 28; Paul John F. Bernardo, 16; April Rey Z. Ocana, 11, and Kelvin G. Alcantara, 14. All are residents of Rodriguez Street in Tondo, Manila. The incident happened on the night of June 4, 2006. A friend of the suspect, a certain Wilson Cruz, was thrown out of the basketball game for unruly behavior. Ramirez sympathized with his friend. After the game, the tailed the members of the opposing team as they were walking on their way home. After awhile, the four team members realized they were being followed. Then they noticed Ramirez handing over a shotgun shell to Cruz, who loaded it into a homemade shotgun and fired at the four players. The players started running away, but they were hit by lead pellets from the shotgun. They went to a nearby hospital for treatment. Cruz is still at-large. - GMANews.TV
