Manila school closes canteen amid food poisoning probe


MANILA, Philippines - After 100 of its pupils were downed after eating some snack items last Friday, a school in Manila closed down its canteen on Monday to pave the way for an investigation into the incident. Radio dzBB's Louie Garcia reported that the Jose Corazon de Jesus Elementary School ordered the canteen closed while authorities look into the cause of the food poisoning. Some 100 students fell ill after eating mais con yelo (corn with shaved ice), and hotdog and egg sandwiches from the canteen of the school located in Manila's Tondo district. The report said that as of Monday morning, at least 78 of the students were still under observation in different hospitals in the city. Initial investigation showed most of the students who fell ill were aged 5 to 11, and complained of stomach pains, dizziness, vomiting, loose bowel movement, and fever. - GMANews.TV
