2 dead, 3 hurt in Kalinga landslide; new storm enters RP

Two children died while their parents and another sibling were injured when continuous heavy downpour spawned by tropical storm âInday" triggered a landslide in the northern Philippine province of Kalinga Monday night, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said. In a report, OCD administrator Glenn Rabonza said the casualties were from Sitio Balani, Lucog village in Tabuk town. The identities of the landslide victims were not mentioned in Rabonza's report, but the Cordillera Administrative Region disaster coordinating council identified them as Allen Mark Carpio, 5; and his elder sister Claudine, 11. Those injured were identified as the childrenâs mother, Aida, 39; their father, Salvador, 41; and another sibling, Rodil, 15. Rabonza also said 24 houses including a church and school were reported to have incurred damages arising from the landslide that occurred about 10 p.m. The OCD said coordination has been made with local officials in the affected area. New storm enters RP The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) said that as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, typhoon âJuan" (international codename: Saomai) has entered the Philippine area of responsibility. Forecasters said Juan was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near its center and gustiness of up to 160 kph. It was located 1,300 kms east-northeast of Basco, Batanes. On the other hand, âInday" has slowed down and was estimated to be 520 km northeast of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is forecast to move west southwest at 13 kph. The weather disturbances are expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the western sections of the country. -GMANews.TV
