Puno: Cha-cha urgently needed in face of global economic slump

MANILA, Philippines – Amid snowballing opposition against efforts to amend the Constitution, Interior Sec. Ronaldo Puno on Thursday insisted on the need to pursue Charter change before 2010. In a report, radio dzBB’s Aileen Intia quoted Puno as saying that amendments to the existing economic provisions in the Constitution are urgently needed in the face of the global financial slump. Puno likewise quelled doubts that Charter change will be used to extend President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s term beyond 2010. Puno's statement came on the eve of a multi-sectoral rally planned in Makati City on Friday, which is expected to be participated by various key personalities from the opposition including former President Joseph Estrada as well as militant groups. In the interview, Puno also said there is no rift between administration allies in the House of Representatives, who are divided on the mode of amending the Constitution. Puno is chairman of the Kabalikat ng Mamayang Pilipino (Kampi) – the President’s political party. Lawmakers belonging to the Lakas political party are in favor of holding a constitutional convention while Kampi members have expressed favor for amending the Charter through a constituent assembly. - Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
