Typhoon unlikely to hit RP for rest of 2008

MANILA, Philippines - A chief state weather forecaster on Thursday said tropical storm “Ulysses" will be the last to hit the Philippines this year, even as he warned that other weather disturbances may still pose threats to the country. In an interview on dzBB radio, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) weather bureau chief Nathaniel Cruz it is unlikely that there will be another storm before the year ends. “Napakababa na po ng tiyansa na magkakaroon pa tayo ng kasunod na ‘Ulysses’ (It is unlikely that there will be another storm after ‘Ulysses’)," Cruz said. Cruz, however, said that the eastern part of the country could experience a series of weather disturbances because of the tail of a cold front affecting the country. “(Ang) cold front tail po ang magdadala ng pag-ulan (sa) eastern side of the country. Makararanas po ng pag-ulan kahit wala tayong bagyo (The tail of the cold front will bring rains to the eastern side of the country)," Cruz said. Cruz also warned that the northeast monsoon winds threaten coastal parts of the country with the strong waves it will bring. “Maalong karagatan, kung di pagiingatan ng mga kababayan natin lalo na ng mga pasehero sa sasakyang dagat (We are advising passengers of vessels that Northeast Monsoon winds will induce big waves)," Cruz said. - Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
