School, playground in Manila named after Cory

The Manila City government has named a new school in poverty stricken Baseco compound after the late former President Corazon “Cory" Aquino as a tribute to her. "Si President Cory Aquino… ang puso niya nasa mahihirap. Itong lugar ng Baseco, ito ang pugad ng kahirapan. Itong bagong tayo na three-storey building na to inisip namin ipangalan sa kanya," said Mayor Alfredo Lim. (The poor always occupied a special place in President Cory Aquino’s heart. That’s what we named a three-storey building here in Baseco after her. Baseco, after all, is where many of Manila’s poor live.) A report over GMA News’ “24 Oras" said the Corazon Aquino High School has 15 classrooms that could accommodate at least 366 students. It is set to open October this year. The report said a newly built playground inside the Baseco compound was also named after the former president. Mrs. Aquino, 76, died on August 1 after a long battle with colon cancer. After a five-day wake that saw the entire nation wrapped in grief and adulation, she was buried at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City beside her husband, slain opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy" Aquino Jr. Lim, a Cabinet official during the Aquino administration, said a monument of Mrs. Aquino would also be erected at the corner of P. Burgos Drive and Roxas Boulevard. - GMANews.TV
