Dam watch: Gov't closes floodgate of overflowing Angat Dam
A floodgate of Angat Dam in Bulacan province was closed Saturday afternoon after its water level overflowed 1.02 meters more than its capacity level of 212 meters, data from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration as of 4 p.m., showed. The dam had been releasing 288.15 cubic meters of water per second when it was closed 1:30 p.m., Saturday. The floodgates in four other Luzon dams, Binga and Ambuklao, both in Benguet, Magat in Isabela, and Ipo in Bulacan remain open releasing volumes of water amid the onslaught of typhoon "Pepeng," which made landfall in Cagayan province at 3 p.m. As of 4 p.m., Pagasa said water in Binga had reached 572.95 meters or 2.05 meters less than the spilling level of 575 meters. One of Binga's gates is opened with an aperture of 0.3 meters. Ambuklao's water level is at 741.20 meters or 10.80 meters more before it reaches its maximum capacity of 752 meters. Six gates of Ambuklao are opened with aperture of three meters each. Magat's water level is at 189.87 meters or 3.13 meters less than its spilling level of 189.87 meters. One of its gates is open with aperture of one meter. Ipo's water level is 100.38 meters or 0.49 meters less than its maximum of 100.87 meters.
