Vintage cannon found in Rizal riverbank after ‘Ondoy’
A rusty cannon believed to be used by Japanese forces during World War II was discovered in a riverbank in Antipolo City in Rizal province during the aftermath of tropical storm âOndoy." The vintage cannon was discovered with three live projectiles and munitions that were later defused, according to Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato of the Armyâs 2nd Infantry Division. The items were recovered last Saturday at Sitio Old Boso-boso in Barangay San Jose. A certain Romualdo Motel reported the discovery to Army officials. Detoyato said they would display the war materiel at the museum of the 2nd ID based at Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal. Detoyato said the 75 mm cannon and projectiles were probably owned by Japanese forces since the area where they were discovered used to be a Japanese camp. He said the war materiel was discovered when parts of it protruded due to soil erosion caused by Ondoy, which lashed Metro Manila and nearby provinces last weekend and killed close to 300 people. 2nd ID spokesman Lt. Celeste Frank Sayson supervised the disarming of the three 50 mm projectiles. âThese war materials are commonly used as anti-aircraft and base protection during World War II," said Sayson. âIts thick metal casing preserved its gun powder and triggering mechanism. The materials are live ammunitions and are capable of inflicting serious damages if accidentally detonated and armed by a civilian," the official added. Last month, a Sherman M4-A1 tank, believed to be used by the United States forces during World War II, was found off Manila Bay during a dredging operation. - GMANews.TV
