Another Binay to lead Makati City

Makati City will still be led by the Binay family after another member of the political clan won in the mayoral race in the May 10 polls. GMA Network reported early Tuesday that Councilor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. was proclaimed mayor-elect of Makati by the city board of canvassers by garnering total votes of 121,088. His closest rival, outgoing Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado, only got 77,389 votes. Other rivals for the city's top elective post were Erwin Genuino, former senator Agapito "Butz" Aquino and Edmundo Tagalog. Among those who witnessed the proclamation rites were outgoing Mayor Jejomar Binay and his wife, Elenita. The elder Binay himself is leading in the vice presidential race based on partial and unofficial consolidation of election returns as of early Tuesday.

The elder Binay was first elected mayor in 1988 and went on to serve until 1995. In 1998, he was named chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) by then President Joseph Estrada. From 1998 to 2001, his wife Elenita Binay served as mayor of the city. In 2001, Jejomar Binay was again elected as mayor. He then went on to win two more terms during the 2004 and 2007 elections. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
