Loretta Makasiar-Sicat, 74, is dead
Political scientist Loretta Makasiar-Sicat, 74, whose husband is economist Gerardo Sicat, passed away on Sunday due to a long-time illness. Sicat's body lies in state at the Church of the Risen Lord in University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, Quezon City. Interment will be at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina on August 18. She is survived by her husband and five children. Sicat was always at the forefront of social-science development in the Philippines and served as executive director of the Philippine Social Science Council. Prior to her stint at the council she taught at UP's Political Science department starting 1964, and at one point served as the department chair. She continued teaching until she fell ill. Sicat finished her doctorate in political science â under a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation â at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology In 1970.
