At least 50 cats facing grisly deaths as laboratory subjects were rescued in a police operation in Quezon City Tuesday night. Radio dzBB reported early Wednesday that police intercepted a jeep transporting the cats to a house where they would be sold to students doing laboratory work. A report by GMA News' Tricia Zafra said the operation stemmed from a tip to local village watchmen that the cats were to be sold to a medical school.
Village watchmen and police acting on the tip stopped the jeep in Talipapa village in the city's Novaliches district past 11 p.m. Tuesday. The struggling cats were found placed inside sacks. Arrested were Roberto Rasalan, Johnny Yee, Archie Garcia, and Arturo Tarlac, who were aboard the vehicle. A separate report on dzBB radio said an initial investigation showed the cats were to be brought to the house of one Artemio Sanchez, where they would be sold for P30 each. Police investigators are also verifying information the cats may also be sold to slaughterhouses where they would be killed and sold for burger patties. It was the third rescue of animals being brought for possible slaughter in the last two months. Last Dec. 7, at least 65 dogs being transported north supposedly to be killed and sold as meat were rescued in Pampanga province. At least 71 dogs were similarly rescued last Nov. 18.
